The Chancellor of the State University System shall cooperate with the Commissioner of Education to support talent retention programs that encourage middle school and high school students who indicate an interest in or aptitude for physics or mathematics to continue their education at a state university that has excellent departments in selected fields. The chancellor and the commissioner shall work with state university department chairs to enable department chairs of outstanding state university departments to send letters to students who indicate an interest in or aptitude for those subjects. At a minimum, the letter should provide an open invitation for the student to communicate with the department, at least annually, and to schedule a tour of the department and the campus.
